UNITED NATIONS GLOBAL COMPACT

Earthcheck Certification

The United Nations Global Compact is the largest international social responsibility initiative. Its purpose is to solve by 2030 the main problems that afflict the planet and humanity, such as poverty, social inequality, and unemployment; as well as protecting the environment, and promoting peace and prosperity.

Cooperation from the private sector is essential to fulfill the long-term objectives of the Global Compact. Thus, all the socially responsible companies that are part of the organization harmonize their own values and mission statements with the ten principles for global improvement implemented by the Global Compact.

¿What are the 10 Principles of the UN Global Compact?

  • Support and respect the protection of internationally proclaimed human rights.
  • Make sure not to be complicit in human rights abuses.
  • Uphold the freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective bargaining.
  • Elimination of all forms of forced and compulsory labour.
  • Effective abolition of child labour.
  • Elimination of discrimination in employment and occupation.
  • Support a precautionary approach to environmental challenges.
  • Undertake initiatives to promote environmental responsibility.
  • Encourage the development and diffusion of environmentally friendly technologies.
  • Businesses should work against corruption in all its forms, including extortion and bribery.

Experiencias Xcaret, a socially responsible company that has been sustainable since its birth, practices these principles and proudly belongs to the Global Compact Network in Mexico, being one of the four companies that constitute the national board.

SCARLET MACAW

Xcaret’s scarlet macaw conservation program was born in 1994 with the first efforts for the reproduction of the species, in order to consolidate in a medium and long term the repopulation of Mexican natural habitats, where it was practically extinct. After developing several techniques, Xcaret consolidated the reproduction of specimens under human care and once the stability of the populations was maintained, the reintroduction stage was scheduled.

Conservacion de Guacamaya

At the end of 2017 it was confirmed that 235 scarlet macaw specimens, reintroduced as of 2013, lived successfully in the jungles of Los Tuxtlas, in Veracruz; as well as in the Palenque region, in Chiapas. By then, the 250 individuals that lived in such ecosystems when reintroduction began had increased by 94%.

The population of wild macaws in Mexico will continue to grow thanks to the collaboration of the UNAM Institute of Biology, Acajungla AC, Ecopark Aluxes, the reserves of Nanciyaga and La Otra Opción, as well as the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Defenders of Wildlife, and Bosque Antiguo A.C.

In addition to intensive work to ensure the conditions that allow the survival of specimens in wildlife, the awareness of local communities has been fostered to stop the capture and illicit trafficking of the species and, on the contrary, to awaken pride around the emblematic bird, which in pre-Hispanic times was considered a deity associated with the sun.

PINK SNAIL

In Xel-Há there are freshwater and seawater ecosystems where many species of both flora and fauna inhabit. The pink snail is a threatened species due to its excessive consumption by humans. In some regions of the Caribbean it is already an extinct species.

Conservacion de Coral Rosa

At Xel-Ha park we have the Protection and Preservation of the Pink Snail ( Strumbus gigas ) program, where the species lives freely. Since 2001, in conjunction with the Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute (CINVESTAV-IPN) Merida Unit, bimonthly monitoring has been conducted to determine the population of snails in the Xel-Ha cove.

The specimens are monitored every certain time to determine their growth rate over the years. In 2010 alone, 4,282 snails from different stages of growth were tagged. Due to this continuous monitoring, it has been detected that the population had an increase of 79% between 2001 and 2010.

One of the best ways to protect it is through environmental education and awareness. Xel-Ha is also the training center for teachers of the Mesoamerican Reef Program, which sensitizes and updates teachers on this problem so that they contribute from their classrooms to a greater awareness among the population

Corals
TThe Program for the Conservation and Active Restoration of Coral Reefs in the Mexican Caribbean is focused on strengthening the genetic diversity of corals, specifically of species that are important in the construction of reefs. Traditionally, the programs were made through the propagation of coral segments; however, this technique, although effective, generates clones and therefore restricts the genetic diversity of corals directly affecting their ability to respond to change. The Xcaret project focuses on obtaining gametes through sexual reproduction that guarantees the genetic variability of the population. Although it is much more complicated to achieve, it ensures viability in the colonies reproduced in the medium and long term. The Program for the Conservation and Active Restoration of Coral Reefs in the Mexican Caribbean is focused on strengthening the genetic diversity of corals, specifically of species that are important in the construction of reefs. The Xcaret project focuses on obtaining gametes through sexual reproduction that guarantees the genetic variability of the population. Although it is much more complicated to achieve, it ensures viability in the colonies reproduced in the medium and long term.

Since 2011, Xcaret park has carried out research efforts to the restoration of reefs, and currently works in coordination with the National Autonomous University of Mexico, INAPESCA (National Fisheries Institute), and the SECORE Foundation (Sexual Coral Reproduction).
Coral reefs are exposed to a series of threats such as pollution by fertilizers, pesticides, metals, hydrocarbons, overfishing, and, as if that were not enough, global climate change, which increases the water temperature and causes serious damage to the constitution of corals.

There are few places in the world that produce corals from the fertilization of gametes, thus ensuring a genetic diversity in the colonies. In the coral farm of Xcaret, sexual recruits of the species Orbicella faveolata and Acropora palmata are kept with the purpose of being reintroduced in affected reef areas.
The action plan includes actions in Punta Venado, where all the coral colonies have been tagged and identified, and experiments have been carried out to know their genotypes.

MARINE TURTLE

The Marine Turtle Conservation Program in the Riviera Maya, organized by the Flora, Fauna y Cultura de Mexico A.C. foundation, is the social and environmental arm of the Experiencias Xcaret Group, in charge of one of the 13 main nesting beaches of the loggerhead turtle ( Caretta caretta ) and the green sea turtle ( Chelonia mydas ). Thanks to this effort, between 1996 and 2017 more than 12 million 649 thousand sea turtle hatchlings made their trip to the sea, a fact unprecedented in the history of the conservation of the species, which speaks of the consistency of the program.

Conservacion de la tortuga marina

The green sea turtle is the species that has recorded the best recovery of its populations throughout these 22 years of work. 2017 was undoubtedly the best year for the green sea turtle population, since 1,507,645 turtles managed to reach the sea, setting a new record.

Rescue and rehabilitation
In Xcaret park you can find the most important Marine Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in Mexico, a task carried out as part of its commitment to reverse the deterioration of the populations of turtles in our country, particularly of greens, hawksbills, loggerheads, and leatherbacks. The sea turtles that the Xcaret Hospital takes care of, arrive with lesions in the fins caused by nets and fishing nets; damage to their digestive system due to the ingestion of hooks; skull and carapace fractures, caused by boat propellers or blunt blows from poachers; bites on the head and extremities due to the attack of dogs and jaguars; as well as various degrees of dehydration and anorexia. This hospital is the only one in our country formally recognized by the authorities. Thanks to its operation, the lives of 564 marine turtles have been conserved in the last 15 years.
